At first glance Kaw is a parkland course, very believable, quite lovely to look at and fairly easy to play. A perfect course when you're game is ailing. This course wont wow you with anything especially different, wont blow you away visually or strategically, but you will find it soothing and enjoyable none the less. Off the tee Kaw is very user friendly. Kaw will accept power driving freely but take care if you miss badly because the trees are quite thick. I really wouldn't call Kaw a risk rewards type course in the classic sense, however it is strategically defiantly very subtle. The real challenge with Kaw is checking the grid on the landing area. There are definitely a lot of side hill lies to contend with. IM sure after playing Kaw more which incidentally I will, and knowing Shawn there are probably flat spots to try to hit to which makes the course more difficult then I think it is. The greens aren't over whelming. There mostly the subtle type at least on the pin 3 position I played her on. I felt the greens were very well designed and like the rest of the course subtlety seems to be the norm. Textures were perfect, well balanced and fit together very well. Split rail fence work was very nice. There are also beautiful rocky areas and wild grass areas, which I felt, were rendered exceptionally well. All water is done properly. The elevation work was subtle and incredibly well done, elegant would be the best description here I think. I discovered unfortunately more than a few areas that required smoothing and it made me wonder if Shawn released the wrong version. Most were out of play but there were a couple directly on one of the greens that was a bit of a bummer. One item of note, Of the four par 3's on Kaw, I though 3 of them were some of the most beautiful I have ever seen. Kaw is a course that you will believe could exist and will remain on my hard drive for quite awhile. Thank you Shawn for a sweet effort.
